WHY IS THIS SITE HERE?

My first experience with Rick and Morty was through the flash-based Rushed Licensed Adventure Game. After seeing two seasons of the show and a cool fan animation my curiousity led me to the Doc and Mharti pilot on YouTube. That's right, YouTube. But that was only the beginning.

In 2015, I created an ask blog on Tumblr based on Doc Smith, dimension number A106. Fun fact: its based on the Doc and Mharti pilot's premiere date. I wanted it to be a parody of ask blogs, just to let off a bit of steam. Basically people send you questions and you respond to them. I did with silly drawings, and I wanted to put effort into them like Doc was really inside the Rick and Morty universe. As a way to open that doorway for the other fandom to interact. I was surprised to get such thought-provoking questions. I was also presented with several challenges. I never sweared much before, I never drew gross shit, and I needed to kill off Mharti.

Little did I know what I was in for. It was the greatest yet horriblest experience of my life. Gradually, the shock and gross humor became the norm, and I began to theorize how the laws and morals of Doc's universe apply differently in Rick and Morty's universe.

Years later and I haven't completed the story, per se. But I still cling to the fascination of Doc and Mharti, and what Channel 101 adopted at the time of the early internet. Websites like AlbinoBlackSheep were a source of entertainment where creatives could upload flash animations as unscrupulous as they come. Or become their own site and get as big as Homestar Runner. It was the wild west web age of entertainment, cause you didn't have to worry about TV guidelines and ratings or any of that bullshit. It was groundless creative freedom. Channel 101 still stands for that. But as the web evolves and censorship increases, I notice it's becoming more and more stagnanted for those who just have a twisted sense of humor or an adult-themed narrative. There will be many stories that will never see the light of day and that's kinda sad.

Doc and Mharti represents the incidental seed of an idea, that in this day and age, would not be possible. If it weren't for the permission to just get crazy with it, we wouldn't have the show Rick and Morty.

Was it perfect? Ye- I mean, no. But what first time idea is? Justin Roiland spent years trying to find a place for those voices that meant alot to him. He had to learn how to create the groundwork for a show that needed more character depth. As well as improve Morty's voice performance, if he was gonna be able to keep voicing him.

Doc and Mharti taught me to loosen up and just make stuff. Cause you'll never know what may come of it. Thank you for teaching me how to laugh at gross stuff and finding years of investment in these pair of goofs as they continue to test my creative will.
